Main Talk Description:

Partisan Realignments of Texas, past, present, and future. From the end of Reconstruction until 1996 the Democratic party held the trifecta of power in Texas, controlling majorities in the State House, Senate, and Executive branches. Since 2002, the Republican party has controlled all three branches. We will discuss how each party maintained their power, and what the political future looks like for Texas.

The Oasis Impact Report for 2023 showcases the significant growth and achievements of Houston Oasis over the past year.


Main Speaker Bio :

Christina Hughes, PhD is an Associate Professor at UHD. She earned her PhD in political science and her BA in history form University of Houston. She has over 20 years of teaching experience and has taught more than 20 different courses in political science and non-profits at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, she served as a research associate for the Center of Public Policy (2000-2006), working on evaluating school programs for the Texas Education Agency and Harris County Department of Education. Her teaching interests are courses on public policy, constitutional design, political theory, elections, democracy and participation, as well as, U.S. and Texas Government. She is second author of The Texas Experiment, Politics, Power, and Social Transformation, recipient of the 2024 Textbook & Academic Authors Association (TAA) Most Promising New Textbook Award.
